The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recorded a significant reduction in institutional maternal deaths in the first half of 2026.
The hospital recorded 55 maternal deaths between January and June 2026, compared with 78 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025.
The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, disclosed this at the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference.
He attributed the decline to targeted clinical mentorship and capacity-building outreach programmes organised for peripheral health facilities in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate.
According to Dr. Baidoo, the interventions are aimed at improving clinical care and the quality of referrals from district and regional hospitals, particularly in maternal health.
He said, “The targeted clinical mentorship and capacity-building programmes have contributed significantly to improving the quality of care and referrals from peripheral facilities.”
Dr. Baidoo added that the hospital exceeded several operational targets during the first half of the year.
He also highlighted major infrastructure developments, including the completion of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre, which is expected to become operational this month.
Other developments include the operationalisation of the Main Dialysis Centre, the completion of a GH¢2.2 million renovation of Doctors’ Flats Block J, and the ongoing construction of a specialist Oncology and Nephrology facility.
Dr. Baidoo said these developments form part of efforts to strengthen specialist healthcare delivery at KATH.
