From Ghana to global excellence: Mivheal Tetteh joins the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Honour Society

Ghanaian scholar Mivheal Teye Tetteh has reached another significant academic milestone, earning induction into the esteemed The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

The recognition, conferred on April 25, places him among an elite group of distinguished individuals, including Nobel Laureate Jimmy Carter and Pulitzer Prize winner Matthew Desmond.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is regarded as the oldest and one of the most selective interdisciplinary honour societies in the United States.

Mivheal’s induction is particularly remarkable given the rigorous eligibility requirements. Membership is strictly by invitation and nomination through a university chapter, making it a highly competitive distinction.

To qualify, students must meet stringent academic benchmarks across different levels. For undergraduate students, juniors are required to have completed a minimum of 72 semester hours (or 108 quarter hours) while ranking in the top 7.5 percent of their class, while seniors must have completed at least 90 semester hours (or 135 quarter hours) and rank within the top 10 percent.

For graduate and professional students, the standard is equally demanding. Eligible candidates must have completed at least 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) at their institution and rank within the top 10 percent of their class. It is within this highly competitive graduate category that Mivheal distinguished himself, meeting the criteria through sustained academic excellence and consistent high performance.

In an exclusive one-on-one interview with Xtra News, Tetteh offered deeper insight into the honour and what it represents. When asked how he felt about the recognition, he described the moment as “ethereal”, explaining that it reflects not only academic excellence but also sustained impact through research that benefits communities.

Addressing perceptions about exclusivity, he clarified the true nature of the society, noting with a light-hearted tone that while many organisations have rigid structures, Phi Kappa Phi is different. According to him, it is “solely an honour society where members help others with research, career direction, and learning strategies”, reinforcing its commitment to service and academic collaboration.

Looking ahead, Tetteh revealed that his next step is pursuing a PhD at Boston College. He highlighted the highly competitive nature of the programme, noting that the institution receives hundreds of applications but selects only a few candidates, and expressed his excitement about becoming part of the Boston College community.

He also acknowledged the influence of mentors, particularly Dr Hazel Hooker, whose insight on adaptability and excellence has shaped his approach to growth and learning.

As he joins this distinguished network of scholars, Tetteh remains focused on contributing meaningfully to his field while continuing to learn from some of the brightest minds across disciplines.

Indeed, for Mivheal Teye Tetteh, the dream continues, and so does the pursuit of excellence.
