In conformity with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Charter), a High-Level Delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Commission) is embarking on promotion mission in the Republic of Ghana from 29th September to 2nd October, 2025 to engage relevant institutions to gather information regarding the implementation of the provisions of the African Charter and its protocols with the view of assisting the country as a State Party to comply with the Charter.
The High-Level delegation paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson (MP) to brief him on the work on the Commission, their mission in Ghana which is to promote the Charter, establish collaboration and accountability mechanism and also to hold constructive dialogue with selected sectors to ascertain the state of play in relation to the implementation of the Charter in the country. The delegation lauded Ghana for its role as African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues and indicated that the country has not been a subject of negative reportage on the issue of torture.
Honourable Gyakye Quayson (MP) on his part, applauded the Commission for the role its playing on the continent to promote human rights and assured of Ghana’s cooperation during the promotion mission and beyond, including sharing of best practices with other State Parties.
The delegation is composed of the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, Country Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the Republic of Ghana and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie; Chairperson of the Committee on Prevention of Torture in Africa, Hon. Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, Chairperson of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations, Hon. Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso; Chairperson of the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Hon. Commissioner Mudford Zachariah Mwandenga.
