Akufo-Addo commissions three new 40-bed district hospitals in E/R

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned three new 40-bed district hospitals on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Having already commissioned four such hospitals in the Ashanti Region late last month, these three latest additions, located in the Okere District, Jumapo in the New Juaben North Municipality, and Kwabeng in the Atiwa West District, are part of a total of twelve 40-bed hospitals in the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, along with one polyclinic in Mim, Brong Ahafo Region.

Former Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu broke ground for these hospital projects in 2020, which were undertaken by VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria.

Other areas where these hospitals have been built across the country include Drobonso, Twedie, Sabronum, Suame, Manso Nkwanta, Nkwatia, Achiase, Mim, and Kpone Katamanso.

A €71,500,000 facility was secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s towards the construction and equipping of these 40-bed hospitals, which also include 12 units of 2-bedroom semi-detached accommodation for hospital workers at each facility.

Aside from residential accommodation for the staff, the hospitals are equipped with an Out-Patient Department with consulting rooms, a Public Health Department with a 36-seater waiting room, three ante-natal consulting rooms, a counseling room, and two offices for Public Health Officers.

The hospitals also include a theatre consisting of one surgical suite, an 8-bed pediatric ward, an 8-bed male ward, an 8-bed female ward, four labor delivery stations, an 8-bed maternity ward, a 4-bed lying-in ward, and a 2-bed recovery room.

President Akufo-Addo urged the staff and residents to ensure that the facilities are adequately administered and maintained to realize the government’s commitment to improving the health status of all residents through enhanced healthcare infrastructure.

The four district hospitals in the Ashanti Region are located in Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District; Sabronum in the Ahafo Ano South East District; Twedie in the Atwima Kwanwoma District; and Suame in the Suame Municipal area. The district hospital at Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District is also complete but yet to be commissioned.
