We began the year with many challenges, but we have been able to steady the tide – Finance Minister tells IMF

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has told a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the government began the year with many challenges, but together they have been able to steady the tide and made significant progress.

He said that while they acknowledge that risks remain,  they are committed to doing all they can to address them.

Dr Ato Forson said this when officials from the Finance Ministry, the Bank of Ghana, and the IMF met in Accra on Monday, September 29 to commence the 5th review of the $3billion programme with the Fund.

A post on the Minister’s X page after the meeting said “Earlier today, I had the honour of receiving the IMF Mission team, led by Dr Ruben Atoyan, as we formally commence the Fifth Review of Ghana’s IMF-Supported Programme.

“We began the year with many challenges, but together we have been able to steady the tide and make significant progress. While we acknowledge that risks remain, we are committed to doing all we can to address them

“Encouragingly, the indicators point in the right direction, and this mission provides us with an important opportunity to receive valuable feedback on the work we have done so far in serving the people of Ghana.”

He added that the Fifth Review offers an important opportunity for Ghana to assess its progress under the programme and benefit from the IMF’s feedback.

In his remarks, Dr. Atoyan noted that the team looks forward to the review in the coming days.

Present at the meeting were the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama; the First Deputy Governor, Dr. Zakari Mumuni; Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem; Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance, Patrick Nomo; and other senior officials from both the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana.
