2024 Polls: UTAG urges all stakeholders to uphold peace, unity and civic responsibility

Ahead of the general elections on Saturday, December 7, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a clarion call to all citizens, political parties, and stakeholders to uphold peace, unity, and civic responsibility as the nation prepares for the general election.

Recognising the importance of this critical moment, UTAG emphasised that peaceful elections are essential for sustaining Ghana’s democratic legacy and ensuring stability for future generations.

UTAG also urges all political actors and supporters to prioritise non-violent dialogue and refrain from actions or statements that could incite conflict or tension.

Commenting on the campaigns of the parties which ended Thursday, December 5, UTAG commended the political parties for largely focusing on constructive discussions centred on ideas, policies, and visions for national development.

In a statement, UTAG also called on Ghanaians to actively participate in the democratic process by exercising their right to vote and adhering strictly to electoral guidelines.

“The Association underscores that civic responsibility involves respecting others’ opinions, avoiding the spread of misinformation, and refraining from inflammatory behaviour. These principles are key to upholding a credible and peaceful electoral process.

“Furthermore, UTAG commends the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, and the Election Security Taskforce for their efforts in ensuring a smooth and secure election process. The Association urges these institutions to remain impartial and transparent in their operations, as public trust in their roles is vital for fostering national unity and ensuring the credibility of the electoral process.

“UTAG appeals to Ghanaians from all walks of life—including youth, women, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations—to rally together to protect the peace and harmony that the nation has long cherished. Through unity, mutual respect, and a commitment to democracy, Ghana can  ontinue to shine as a beacon of democratic excellence on the African continent,” the statement said.
